Miniature Butterfly Stool
As a student in the 1940s Sory Yanagi had become acquainted with Charlotte Perriand and subsequently became familiarized with the European modern movement. His interest in furniture and seating ensues, interestingly enough, as seating was practically nonexistent in traditional Japanese culture. Even today many urban households get along without seating; traditionally one sits upon tatami mats on the floor.
The iconic Butterfly Stool is an unusual and graceful design. It is produced using the Eames plywood formation techniques. This piece combines an elegance derived from simplicity and function, distinctly drawing from traditional Japanese forms. This designer felt that creation should contribute to the betterment of civilization, and should never be mere repackaging of old ideas.
The authentic Vitra Miniature always comes in the little wooden packing box from the Vitra Design Museum Collection.
